2. David Wabeladio Payi

David Wabeladio Payi, inventor of Mandombe script, one of the very few inventors of a script for Bantu languages, has passed away. His invention of the Mandombe script is of considerable importance for the investigation of African scripts. On the occasion of the workshop “5000 Jahre Schrift in Afrika”, November 27-29, 2008 at the university of Cologne, he presented his script with great enthousiasm. Many Congolese among the audience had come from all over Germany just for his very presentation. We will always keep him in honorable memory.

David Wabeladio Payi became famous among the Kimbangui community (with Kamba as its spiritual centre) because of script Mandombe ‘for the Blacks’, which he invented in 1978 in Mbanza Ngungu in the province Bas-Congo of the DR Congo. He always claimed to have invented the script after a divine order to create a genuine African writing system, but many Kimbanguists believe that it was revealed to him by God. Albeit Wabeladio has no university degree he was given the status of researcher and professor of script at the Université Simon Kimbangu in Kinshasa where he taught the script and developed it further.

Kimbanguists in the overseas diaspora made his name and the script known at several universities in Europe and America. It is regularly taught in some urban centres in Belgium and France. Wabeladio’s name was so well known that he got several invitations to present the script in Lissabon, but also in Paris and in Cologne.

After the script was discussed in the International Journal for the Sociology of Language  (Pasch 2008), efforts were made to grant him an honorary doctorate which he finally got in December. Originally there were plans to have the ceremony in Kisangani, where there is a growing Kimbanguist community. This proved, however, difficult for technical reasons, and the ceremony took place on December 22, 2011 at the University of Kinshasa. The next day he was received in Kamba by the spiritual leader of the J.C.C.E.S.K. (Jesus Christ's Church on earth by his special Envoy Simon Kimbangu (J.C.C.E.S.K.) which delivers messages from Papa Simon Kimbangu) Simon Kimbangu.

There are numerous publications on Wabeladio and on the Mandombe script, mostly in the internet. In the following a selection is given:
